I don't think that's what people are saying. I certainly think you could wear the Grant with a suit. I think the point being made was that all else being equal, a plain monk is going to be much more versatile.

More versatile and elegant....Plain monks will not shock with a suit or a pair of jeans...

Whenever I think of monk straps, I think of Tintin:

Responding to the OP - Yes on monks with suits. I wear that often. Perhaps the AE Mora in black will work for you. It has the plain cap-toe some of the other posters advocate.

BTW, JM2C, the AE Mora in brown calf has the widest range of any shoe in my closet. IMHO, it goes well with a suit on the formal end and well with jeans on the informal end. If anyone asked me what should be my second pair of shoes after a pair of plan cap-toe exfords, I'd say a brown, plain cap-toe double monk.

THE FINALIST?
THE DARK HORSE?
The only difference between the plain toe is cordovan.
Thanks toall.

I still don't think black is a good choice.

But if you are set on it, and out of those 4 choices, price considered, I would choose the Mora, which you can get at a discount, if it fits you well.

I have the Alden plain monk in burgundy cordovan but I would not buy it in black, it would be kind of a waste of money.

Can I add these to the mix and ask if you were to pick the Mora and any one of the other which would it be...and why?

+1 for the mora. Probably because I actually wore it with a suit just last week. However, it was also sans a tie (which, apparently, a lot of people here disapprove of

), so take my advise for what it's worth. Personally, I think it depends what you're trying to convey with your particular outfit. I feel a monk strapped shoe with a suit is a more youthful look. I would never wear one to a business meeting.

If bluchers worked with a tux in Casino Royale, I'm sure monks will work with a suit in the OP's workplace.

I agree the monks shown have a little too much going on though.

i have no qualms wearing the grants with a suit or anything else for that matter save a tux. but then again, i don't run in conservative business dress circles, in fact quite the opposite.

It's a movie, at least James Bond. Nothing to do with the "real" world.
