Michael Douglas says cunnilingus caused his cancer. Is anything safe these days?

Michael Douglas is saying that oral sex and not smoking caused his throat cancer.

Asked whether he now regretted his years of smoking and drinking, usually thought to be the cause of the disease, Douglas replied: "No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus."

It doesn't matter that Douglas got it from the ex, from CZJ, or from another. It really seems quite possible that he contracted the cancer this way.

It is well known that hpv causes throat and tonsils cancers. There are many types of hpv and about 75% of the population has the virus. Only a few of them are carcinogenic, the most frequent being 16 and 18. Most hpv strands have no effect on our health or simply cause warts.

I believe that douglas' cancer is probably multifactorial. While hpv may have caused a carcinogenic effect in his case (easily tested on tumor tissue from his specimen), alcohol and smoking are major synergetic risk factors. Cancer is usually multifactorial and in terms of causes, throat cancer is not as "straightforward" as cervical cancer, which is clearly only caused by hpv (unless you get a rare tumor). Otherwise, boys would get the hpv vaccine (gardasil) shot.

Someone on TV commented that there is no reliable way of diagnosing HPV unless it has manifested in cancer (then it's a biopsy) and therefore his ex-wife could be a carrier and not know it. So, in the context of unprotected oral sex, nobody is very safe from HPV unless vaccinated.

I don't think you'd get hpv in the tonsils then, but if you touch your soldier and then put your hand in your mouth you can ''inoculate'' yourself. Always better to be safe and have protected sex If you're really concerned seek professional advice.

Anyway, does anyone know what are the odds of someone with a sexual strain of HPV developing warts on the hand or face? Of course most people who aren't elderly probably will have non-tiny warts treated (especially facial warts) and therefore they won't be suspected as 'unclean.'
