Mensa: Is there really any appreciable benefit to joining?

The dumb threads IQ thread got me thinking... I could probably pass the MENSA entrance qualifier... but would I want to?

I know there are some discounts on things like insurance, and etc. But aside from that, I hear these stories about a bunch of stuck up nerds getting together trying to one up each other. Maybe thats not accurate, I dont really know.

Anyone a member? Is there any reason that a low wage ex-con laborer like myself with what probably works out to a mid 130's IQ would even want to join? How much social or financial networking goes on? I'd be interested in joining if it might put me in touch with people who could be interested in producing films for example.

Anyone have any real life input?

I couldn't imagine socializing with those people. It seems like a microcosm of an academic department, i.e. hell on earth. Bunch of self-righteous know it all's working on their one-upmanship skills.

Strikes me as incredibly iGent.

This is pretty much what I've heard. Due to the nature of their admission requirements, you would think the members suffer from a combination of insecurity and elitism.

Personally, I think we might be better off starting an effort to get Tokyo Slim a pardon. Seems a shame that a youthful, harmless, indiscretion is still an issue.

Sorry... search is sort of a pain on my phone.

I'll check that other thread when I get home. A pardon would be nice. Maybe I can talk to my grandfather and he can pull some strings for me.

You make it sound like the clothing forum side of SF, but with a test attached

Maybe we should join and do that documentary. Can we get some hidden cameras implanted in nerd glasses?

People that belong to Mensa are always very careful about getting the word out that they are members without actually seeming to get the word out themselves.. Pulling this off, which is probaly quite difficult, is a true testament to their, intelligence?

As an aside, the Playboy Girls of Mensa spread from the late '80's wasn't bad at all.

I believe I know of at least one adult film star who's a member of MENSA.
