Been looking to get a pair of eyeglasses for a while now and I'm feelin some metal frame ones but my wardrobe these days consists mostly of workwear/plaids, disheveled prep type stuff...

are plastic frames more appropriate w/ this kind of wardrobe? ideally, itd be nice to have both a metal and plastic pair, but financial constraints prevent me from doing so. any thoughts or recommendations appreciated

I like the look of plastic frames better and have been wearing them for a few years. My only comlaint is that they tend to slowly bend out of shape and I have to get them adjusted constantly.

Having a variety of frames is as important to me as a variety of shoes. One frame just can't fit all purposes. I have a metal frame that is angular for wearing with more fashion forward clothes. I have round metal frames for traditional preppy and plastic round and rectangles for in between. Then, maybe I'm all wrong and you just need one amazing frame that really suits your personality and the shape of your face.

One of my buddies has something like 20 different frames, hes frames always match his tie for the day. Its too bad we dont have a place like Zoff here in the states. In Japan you can get all kinds of modern looking styles in piles of colors for really cheap at Zoff and another place I cant remember.

I would think that it would end up looking rather contrived if you always strive to match things somehow...

I think this is the way to go. Granted, it may not be easy to find that amazing frame.

Frames are easy. If you are not wearing glasses just for looks the lenses are going to be the expensive part of the equation..

I've usually had good luck just finding one good frame that goes with everything. However, if your style varies widely to the point where you're wearing suits to work and dress like a skater in your free time, obviously a single pair isn't gonna cut it.

I think it's nice to have something that you always wear, like the same pair of glasses/sunglasses, necklace/ring/bracelet, even one pair of shoes. It becomes part of your general appearance and it complements the rest of the stuff you wear.

More is not always better and sometimes and I think having several pair of glasses might look too contrived.

I would say try to find the pair of glasses that you can stick with.

Look at the whole question from a prescription wearer's perspective. There are loads of people out there who wear shades with corrected glasses and make them work.
Now finding that perfect pair...
