It's possible, but why do it if it isn't necessary?

I thought there actually were serious questions about if sodium is linked in anyway to hypertension.

Linked and "the only cause" are two different things. Even the article posted above acknowledges that hypertensive people benefit from reduction in sodium intake... I think that piece is irrefutable.

Whether or not it is possible to over-consume sodium and not be hypertensive is a different story- I'm sure heredity and other factors are equally or more important.

Some, not all. From the article:

First, a reduced-salt diet doesn't lower everyone's blood pressure. Some individuals' blood pressure can actually rise in response to less salt, and most people aren't affected much either way. The more notable drop in blood pressure tends to occur in some "” but by no means all "” people with hypertension, a condition that affects more than a quarter of American adults.
Emphasis added. The point is that the science on this is much less settled than conventional wisdom and the certainty of the pronouncements of the public health community would suggest.

Fair enough - I overstated the relationship. Remember , I'm on the side of blanket reductions are dumb, so.. take it with a grain of salt
