i thought i gave pretty sound advice.When or if you bump into large sums of money you should purchase something that normally you would have to save up for.like that ipad that was mentioned.and in OP's case 1000 bucks is a lot -_-

put it in a term deposit for the length of your deployment, when you get back you'll have had lots of time to think about it and will likely know EXACTLY what you want to do with it. (coming home is like a new life according to my brother) Then you'll have made a few bucks safely, no stress.
