43, to answer the OP.

Back in the 80s (student) and 90s (work), I would occasionally wear tassles and other loafers because everyone else my age wearing proper shoes seemed to wear full brogues exclusively and it was a minor way of departing from the orthodoxy. I still have some from back then, largely unworn for a decade or more, including a lovely pair of Foster's bespoke made for someone else who died or got arrested before he could collect them. I stopped wearing black loafers with suits when my last pair of black Wildsmith country house shoes (aka EG Harrows) died on me in around 2002.

I have recently started wearing a Foster's RTW (C&J) black pair of tassels every once in a while (I work in a black shoe industry, in a black shoe city). There's just something slightly louche about them that I like. And contrary to internet groupthink, while they may get noticed, they are entirely acceptable conservative business dress, in even the most conservative bits of London.

Tassels are an American idea that is best executed by English makers and best worn by Italians.

As someone whose hit or miss efforts at personal style can be summarised as an Englishman dressing like an Italian trying to dress like an Englishman, I'm oddly fond of them.

Lasbar: I'm pleased to see, not I think for the first time, that you and I reach broadly similar conclusions, albeit sometimes from different bases (how is your latest SR exprerience?).

In my intermittent time on SF, I am keen to make the distinction between: (a) the ideal, according to SF, AAAC (a different world where AE seconds and BB Gold Fleece are worshipped), or the wider iGentry and (b) the real world.

The first is obviously preferable. But the idea that wearing tassled loafers with a suit, or even a poorly-fitting RTW suit, or a naff tie, will make the difference or not between getting a job, signing a contract, or sealing a nuclear arms reduction treaty or not, is palpably wrong.

Beyond a basic dress code, the details have no real effect and any negative or positive attributes are at best marginal and on the nano-level. A while ago, I interviewed a well dressed young man for a job, but he was a c#ck at interview and so did not get it, his dress being irrelevant beyond my later wanting to ask him where he had bought his rather nice silk knit tie while explaining the bad news (which I did not do: though I did advise his later boss to tell him to do up all the cuff buttons on his RTW suit for fear of him appearing a c#ck).

None of which is to say you should not enjoy your clothing. That's what SF is about, and all hail to it. But the idea that President X, CEO Y, or Dowager Duchess Z will ostracise you for wearing corrected grain shoes in their presence is wrong to the point of paranoia, much as we here might wish it was the case.

So as an Italian American I basically have to wear them?

In all sincerity it cracks me up that people are vehemently opposed to tassels. Especially in my more money-conscious days, it was great to have a pair of shoes that worked just as well with chinos, jeans and shorts as they did with an interview suit. However, even today, I still love them and own a pair in shell, suede and calf.
