For the indoor workouts, the trainer knows how much resistance it’s providing and how fast you’re turning the pedals, so it calculates the wattage based on those variables. Out on the road, the most common type of power meter uses a strain gauge to measure the deflection of the crank arm or pedal axle to calculate the force you’re exerting and typically has an accelerometer or magnet/sensor to measure your cadence.I have no idea how wattage is actually calculated but I do know that when I go spinning, I struggle to get up above 300 watts even for just a moment or two.
