I have a nice vintage (2b, narrow lapels, looks to be part mohair) suit I want to alter a bit to get the waist nipped in. It's a 60s undarted style, which means the waist is almost nonexistent. It's half lined so I already opened up to look at the front underarm seam, and I can get to that to alter it, while the rear underarm seam is in the unlined portion which is very easy to work on.

My question regards the bias of my new seams - should I take more from the front (chest) of the front seam and more from the rear of the rear seam? I am not up to removing the sleeve and all that, so these will have to taper from the armhole down.

Any input is much appreciated.

Underarm seams in question:

Waistless suit: (sorry about these pics, I had to lighten them up a ton to show anything)

The waist could go in about 3" or so but I'm not necessarily looking for that much.

Thanks.

With a bit more info I can give you some specific guidance.

Measurement from front edge to center back seam. This is the jacket girth.

Your waist measure. Not your trouser waist but a couple inches above your trouser waist at the largest part of your circumference. A snug measure but not tight and not loose.

A side and back view are helpful but not necesary.
