Hard vs. Soft leather briefcases/bags

I currently use a soft vinyl messenger/briefcase bag thingy I bought at CompUSA, it's pretty pathetic, I need to look good for the office.

Made in Turkey, hard leather
Made in Tuscany, soft leather

So I'm looking at two different ones, similar in size, but one (the Darker one, made in Turkey) is hard leather.

I don't have a laptop. What are the benefits to soft vs. hard leather briefcases? I'm not sure which one to get.

Hard vs soft aside, the Turkish one is ugly.

While the Turks may have many skills and talents, the design of men's leather accessories is not one of them.

What is unattractive about the Turkish one exactly? Can you be more specific?

The Turkish one looks crudely made and finished to me and the leather used has either been very inconsistently tanned or very badly dyed. I cant see it aging gracefully. Just MHO of course, difficult to judge from a photo
