Grenadine "fraying" or "pilling"

How delicate are your grenadine ties?
Mine (from Paul Stuart) seems to be reasonably delicate in that it seems to be "micro-fraying" allover the tie, almost giving it a fuzzy appearance if you stare at it up close. I don't think this is noticeable to someone just looking at me wearing the tie, but it is certainly a bit disconcerting to me given that I, like most SFers, care way too much about this kind of stuff. Is this standard for grenadines, or have I just ruined my tie?

I think the cause of this is just stuff (my arm, my shirt, my jacket when buttoned) rubbing against the tie.

I have had the same problem with a Ben Silver grenadine. It has only happened with one of the two I purchased though.

yes, probably the most frustrating thing about grenadine. in my case, however, it just doesn't start fraying or pulling by itself...i usually cause it by catching a loop in my watchband or something...

Most woven neck wear will show signs of this but more so on Grenadines because of their loose weave.
A trick of mine to clean up the edges is to trim back the feathering with a pair of cuticle scissors and then quickly run the flame of a stick match along the edges. The silk will melt to a clean edge.
One time, I didn't have any matches and decided to try the gas stove top. There went that tie.

I imagine sealing all the ends with a flame would work but is far too delicate for me, I think I'd scorch mine even with a match....

One of my grenadines has started to pull apart at the stitching on the back, I'm not sure if this is just particularly poorly made = it's a Vicri of Porto.

I was quite serious. I would practice on an old tie but this does work and I often clean up my woven ties this way. They look like new when done. Ohio Blue Tip matches work the best and you have to run the flame quickly along the edges.

Johnny Crockett, A grenadine is indeed a delicate weave and they should be kept away from sharp objects to avoid pulling and too much abrasion can cause fraying. With that said I have a few grenadines that I wear quite often which have no problems. Hroi, "yes, probably the most frustrating thing about grenadine. in my case, however, it just doesn't start fraying or pulling by itself...i usually cause it by catching a loop in my watchband or something..." Exactly - be careful of seat belts and rough fingernails.... Iceball. I am with you the flames may work but make me nervous so I do not advise this method. The problem with the seam on the back is a combination of the loose grenadine weave and a standard 3-fold construction. With a 6-fold construction you typically won't have this problem. 6-folds require more silk and labor and an extra charge. We are currently working on a 4-fold construction which will not be as expensive as a 6-fold and that will be a practical solution.

At times my fingertips get dry and rough, so I have to apply a hand cream before I wear a grenadine tie.
Otherwise I'm apt to catch a thread.
