I've become more concerned with how I dress, and, as a result, I have decided that my white ankle socks no longer are cutting it. I figured I would make this thread for discussion of the finer points of sock style and cutting edge sock tech.

So guys, show me cool socks and help me spend even more money.

Paul Smith socks are my go-to's. They retail for $35, which is a lot for a pair of socks, but they can be gotten for as low as $11 during saletimes.

I like stripes & argyles, and you can find these pretty easily anywhere these days. One of my fave pairs of argyles (olive green with pale green colorway) I got from Old Navy for $5. Socks are the one item I will take a look at no matter what store I'm in as you can find some pleasant surprises. And they're usually cheap enough to just buy if it strikes your fancy without thinking about it so it's easy to amass a huge sock wardrobe in no time.

Great thread topic.

I'm a huge fan of socks, they are my favorite accessory. I also generally look at them at every store I go to.

I like patterns. Bright, contrasting colors aren't really my style, except with jeans. VK Nagrani currently are my favorites. I find Paul Smith socks great, but some of his stripes are just too bright for my taste. I generally dress "business casual" for work and rarely wear a suit/tie.

Jhane Barnes have fantastic patterns as well. The best place to find these is at the Saks Off 5th stores or Neimens stores.

I've found that socks are kind of like ties. I probably now have over 50 pairs of them.

Here's a link to one store in Toronto that I stumbled on that had some great socks: http://www.hhalpernesq.com/c220832.2.html

One thing that is a HUGE pet peeve of mine: Any sort of athletic sock with dress shoes. Or wearing dress socks with shorts. My wife has orders to shoot me if I ever do this.

$35 does sound like quite a bit for a pair of socks, but, then, I used to think anything over $100 for a pair of shoes was crazy.

I have a friend at school that pulls off dress socks with shorts very well. He wears these cuttoff cords and all black converse. He's perfected the I don't care what I look like look but looks damn good doing. Though he'd never admit it.

Argyle is only proper for socks and socks are only proper in argyle.

There are many lots of argyle socks on eBay. Has anyone ever bought one? I figure the worst-case scenario is that cheap cotton socks wear through quickly...

I use to have a very utilitarian view of socks, but now I'm 100% with GS... they're one item of clothing where you can truly be creative with. Argyles look awesome, as whodini has shown. I still can't imagine spending more than $10 on a pair of socks, yet. Today I picked up two argyle and one striped seafoam green songs from the GAP for $2 a pair. I have no clue what to wear them with. Perhaps the seafoam green gingham 3B-collar OCBD shirt I bought today?

It's from RL's Rugby line. I don't know much about the Rugby line, since it's the first time I've seen it (it was at one of those overstock/discount stores, Winners). I suspect it's RL's attempt to get at the Abercrombie crowd.. there's a skull and some text on the bottom (you can't see it if it's tucked). It was $25, and the small was so slim my scrawny pipes couldn't fit through. It has a pocket, but I'm going to attempt to remove it.

"RL30" code brings the price to $41.99.

Looks like it might be boxy and the armholes look huge. In a similar print, BR has a long sleeve linen shirt in stock, and currently on sale. Probably boxy as well though.

What a tangent.. argyle socks to gingham shirts

nice! I even like the surcingle belt and khakis paired with the shirt, a perfect combo. I have teal RLPL socks that would probably fit right in with your clobber
