Actually midnight blue has always been a choice for tuxedos. It was a bit more obvious in skyfall but remember even in casino royal the tuxedo was midnight blue not black. In certain lights it looks blacker than black. Below are pics of a midnight blue suit. The first one looks black because of the lighting and the second is from the same night same suit and all but looks more "blue"

I didn't say that they were invented for Skyfall, haha. I said that they're very popular now because of Skyfall. I did say that they have a place, but I recommended black first. In the end, it's OP's decision.

...still just one man's opinion.

No problem. And from your post ill be sure to ask you next time about which ties go well with what color since you obviously have such a clear eye when it comes to these things.

It is nothing the bad, as you may have change into the darker suit and not the rest for the cocktail event. But objectively a darker tie will be more coherent for midnight blue.

it is very common and lots of people do it.

haha i know you didn't say they weren't invented for Skyfall. Im just saying they were a thing since before skyfall, i would recommended black first as well but my point was midnight navy is a suitable alternative if you wanted something a bit more interesting as it is "blacker than black" in certain lighting. I believe it went something like in the early 20th century black fabric showed greenish under candlelight while midnight blue showed as a rich black. I might be misquoting "candle light" for "artificial light" though.

Since Tom Cruise is a short guy, do you guys think the peak lapel looks good on him?

May I suggest this?

Mignight blue, notch lapel :p

Certainly looks sharp. Think a first tux should be traditional black tie though, so I would err on the side of peak lapels.

Isn't a notch lapel tux considered less formal?

Less formal, yes, but that isn't the problem with it. Shawl lapel is also less formal than peak, but certainly still nice. The problem with notch lapel is that it is one (big) step closer to a loung suit, which I find completely unappealing.

No it is not, black tie are even meant to be a formal event, you dress as your best for the night.
There is no such thing as the correct lapel for black tie, it depends on the taste of the wearer.

However, I do believe shawl lapel were design specifically for dinner jackets.

The shawl lapel is the most formal, followed by peak and then notch lapel.
