I guess Merriam-Webster has it wrong too

. 1 : a low shoe laced or tied over the instep

Which would certainly include the derby.

Of course, I presume the Oxford English Dictionary would be the final authority on the oxford

My original point was that I doubt anybody reading this thread was unable to follow the original post along with the included picture, and I expect most readers are aware that in America the term oxford is more generally used to mean a lace-up shoe including bluchers/derbies and balmorals/oxfords.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, I'll leave you the last word if you wish for it.

I also have the Johnston & Murphy Melton which I believe is an Oxford. It doesn't get as many compliments as the Waldorf, maybe because it has more of a formal executive look about it.

Thanks, I thought you would like these. I was pretty happy when I added them to my rotation.

My thoughts exactly. The correct American English term for those shoes in the opening post is "blucher". "Balmoral" is the usual American term for an Oxford with closed lacing.

Balmoral of course means something different in British English, it being an alternative term for a galosh Oxford.
