You don't but there are a lot worse alternatives to being a frat boy, that's all.

We don't have frats here, but from my understanding while not being in a frat doesn't automatically make you a loser, it sure as hell doesn't hurt.

Yes, all GDI are not only anti-social losers, but they also have tiny cocks and cant bench more than their own body weight.

Not true. Independants (not greek) are not losers. Most are ust people who are for their own reasons not interested in the fraternity / sorority social system. Some are losers, but not because they are not in a fraternity.

Alot of people here (and elsewhere) have this strange stance on fraternities. For example, they chastize them for dressing the same, yet hang out on a message board where we have SF approved brands / outfits and people start threads asking "how do I look"?

I would be willing to bet that more than a few of the criticizers are simply people who would have like to be, but werent invited into Greek culture and are harbouring a bit of an inferiority complex.

Its easy to take on an elitist / critical stance of something in order to mask your own insecutiries or social ineptitudes. "Ohh, you dont want me in your club? Well I wouldnt be in your stupid club anyways. You all drink crappy keg beer & wear A&F and I drink 18 yo single malt and wear Brioni. Pfffft, who would want to hang out with hot little sorority girls... They are all dumb and giggle and spend daddy's money. how do I know all this? I read it in an expose / watched a teenage drama on Fox / some frat guys sit behind me in chemistry class."

Most people who are not Greek are totally cool. Its ust that they are confident enough about who they are and what they want that they dont need to make sweeping generalizations about a social system in order to make themselves feel better about their self perceived shortcomings.

^ +1 People around here can be pretty goddamn elitist. I was browsing one of the old 'What are you Wearing' threads and some guy, forget who, had an A&F button down shirt with some raw denim. The shirt fit better than the denim (looked like too sized down imo), but just the brand of the shirt interrupted the circle jerk and his post was followed with hate like "dude goin to the frat party 2night?" etc. It's like you said, being anonymously rude to strangers on the Internet makes them feel better about themselves or something.

For the record I've never really been interested in joining a frat, though I've been invited by a few friends. I've known a decent amount of frat kids, some of them were cool, but plenty of them obnoxious too. The point is, generalizing and judging people for not drinking 18 yo single malt and wearing A&F rather than Brioni is no different from being one of the obnoxious assholes, just with different tastes.

you make it seem like most kids join frats when they go to college. I'm not yet in college but when I go i'm not planning on it. And it's not because I'm some anti-social loser, I just don't find it appealing.

I'm not sure if you are referring to my post, but I want to be clear that I'm not calling anyone a loser except for the losers

(greek or independant) who look for such superficial reasons to put down others in order to make themselves feel bigger.

What I was saying was, to clarify, not being in a frat does not necessarily make you a loser. However, it certainly doesn't hurt your social standing to join one - the inference being that it helps.

If I go to the US to do a PhD, I will definitely join a frat. I may even decide to wear some A&F for those special occasions

A&F isn't enough. You will need to wear your baseball cap sideways.

I know of a nice place to meet people, the BK Lounge.
A fine place, that has no bouncers hence easy to get into.

Are there a significant number of people getting their PhD's joining and becoming actively involved with frats? Most people I know who were involved did so solely as part of their undergraduate careers.

True, but I think there is also just good old elitism that is there because of social upbringing and it should not be automatically classified as coming from a person who is insecure.

Yea, I dont really know that any grad or doctorate students pledge. You might still be active if you were a brother in undergrad, but prob only popping around for parties or a bite.

Ummm ok... Although "good old" elitism via social upbringing might also be viewed as a form of insecurity that the peasants may start getting ideas above their station...

Whatever. Basic premise is still the same. Putting down others ust to make yourself feel better.

Can I at least also take up baseball? Or does my baseball cap need to be purely for show?

I see it now: they shall call me the doc! Or possibly il dottore if they're familiar with comedia dell'arte.
