I was at Isetan Men's today, and saw several Edward Green shoes with a rounded turned up Budapester-ish toe. They were marked as being on the 444 last. Has anyone heard of this last? Were my eyes deceiving me?

Hmm. I wonder if this is an update of the Peal-esque 404.

I didn't like it too much. To my eye, it combines two traits of which I am not terribly fond -- a rounded toe, and slightly up turned Budapester snout. If I recall correctly, all of the shoes on the last were bluchers. Ironically, I suspect that the last may fit my foot better than the 888, which to my eyes is the most asthetically pleasing. If I am able to make it to Isetan again this week, I will try to learn more.

I need to see it in person, but I'm not too crazy about it.

Isn't the 707 the Flusser last?

Yes, meant to be a copy of the old BB Peal shoes from the '50s and '60s.

The EG Peal lasts had names, not numbers. All BB Peals were on either the TMARS or SZO lasts. So I was informed by EG last year.

If anything, it looks better in the photo than it does in person...

Flusser's 707 is not one of the originals, but a version created for him to look like the old Peal lasts. I don't know how close they come. 707 is a nice last -- great toe shape -- but it's a bit long, and looks REALLY long on big feet.

EG described the 404 as "[t]he traditional Trans-Atlantic Peal shape" two catalogues ago. I believe that this last dates from the late '90s. Tony Gaziano has said that it didn't have very good fit characteristics, which may explain why it has disappeared from the catalogue. 707 is the rendition of the Peal shape made for Flusser. Here's a pair of Jun Kuwana's EG shoes on 404:

Jun Kuwana also had a pair of Brooks Brothers Peal shoes made by EG, and he lists those as being made on the 520 last:

The pictures that centipede posted look a lot like both of these shoes to me. The toe isn't upturned, but the walls are high, as is typical of Peal-type lasts.
