Durable cashmere sweater brands?

When you say Elgin is that Johnston's of Elgin? Is that a good brand?

I have a Borrelli cashmere sweater that was starting to pull away a bit around the collar. I sent it to them and they fixed it, no charge. So, while not exactly durable, their willingness to repair it seems to indicate a commitment to quality.

Another vote for JCrew cashmere sweaters. Durable and a good buy for the price, especially if it's on sale.

Elgin is a brand separate from Johnstons. Johnstons is a decent Scottish cashmere brand. The sweaters simply labelled "Elgin" are either a lower sub-brand or another brand entirely. Lot of them at Nordstrom Rack.

I have seen Avoncelli's macaroni sweater (which is something like 24 ply) rebadged for Brioni. I am not sure if this arrangement is true for all their sweaters though, or just for this garment as it is a very special piece.

I'm a little surprised by all of the love given to J. Crew cashmere. I bought a blue v-neck this winter and the entire sweater exploded with pills after one wearing. It looks like blue fur at this point.

Pretty sure that Begg doesnt do sweaters. Weaves (Scarves, Shawls etc) yes.

Knitwear, (Sweaters etc) no.

Add Murray Allan (Now who sells that??? to the list of quality Scottish knitwear.

Vintage cashmere on ebay is fairly inexpensive, esp. in the warm months. All the good old Scottish brands come up semi-frequently.

I hand wash cashmere in Woolite and dry it flat. I'm wary of washing machines (perhaps I should get one of those lingerie bags of mesh) and of course never use the dryer.
