Does calf suede stretch more than smooth calf leather?

Hi All,

I'd like to know from your experience how suede actually stretches over time, is it more or less than a smooth calf leather?

I'm considering getting the C&J Drummond in suede on the 348 last. Thing is my Westbournes on the same last were quite snug in the toe box area but after a couple of wears opened up to be nice and comfortable but without any noticeable bulges. I'm concerned if I buy the Drummonds in the same size, being suede they may be more likely to stretch and ruin the natural line of the shoe.

What do you reckon?

Many thanks for your help.

I'd say suede stretches a bit more than calf, but only a bit. It shouldn't stretch enough through normal wear where you would need a different size.

Suede is not like (APC) denim where it "grows" a few inches with extended wear--where your size 32 jeans end up a size 34 or larger. Rather, suede tends to have a little more give initially (compared to calf), but maintains its shape overall. You don't have to worry. It's not like your sleek C&J 348s are going to end up looking like an Alden Barrie if that is your concern.

Oh man I can't thank you enough! You hit the nail on the head with the Alden Barrie contrast..thanks again.
