I'm considering diving into some classic Who now that I have seen all the nuWho. Still contend that Smith is the best at it out of the new guys, but would like to gain some context of the older stuff.

The older stuff is great. I grew up on it. It's often hokey and the special effects are virtually non-existent but the shows are a lot of fun. And since they keep bringing back old enemies and plot points in the new series it will give you a new appreciation of those things. The Master, the Daleks, all that stuff has a rich history that's worth looking at.

Pacing is much different than the new series, but there are great pleasures to be had, especially in the dialogue and Tom's performance.

Even if I am not familiar with it all, I think one of the things that intrigues me the most about the show is it's rich history. Makes everything feel grand and takes away from any "silliness" that some enemies may or may not have. I feel the same way about the DC universe and it can work well to any fantasy/sci-fi narrative that goes on for an extended time.

Tom Baker holds my favorite line for any doctor ever. It's in his first episode when he says "You may be a Doctor, but I'm the Doctor. The definite article you might say!"

Listening to the Dr. Who Audio Dramas on iTunes. Really awesome for a long drive. Very impressed by the quality and production value.

Any of you following the news & rumors for the 50th anniversary special? It sounds like they have something planned, but it won't be nearly as "big" as fan expectations want. Right now they are doing a documentary of some sort and a 1 hour tv movie. I wasn't really expecting them to do more then one show on it, but a standard hour long seems a little short to me.

I think I said this earlier in the thread, but it bares re-stating:

"Special" episodes will never be as good as ones buried mid-season. It is a chance for writers to show off to the widest audience. That means that a larger proportion than normal will be Young, old, or only "mildly interested". As such anything that is too complex, resolves issues that need a lot of back-story and anything too scary or exiting has to be skipped.

The result is an episode that can introduce a new character or utilise a celebrity "guest companion" that will attract some ratings or occasionally be a way to kill of a Doctor.

Don't get em wrong, I'll still be sitting down to watch, but generally I'm more exited for normal episodes than I am for specials.

Well what of the rumors of multiple Doctors making an appearance? That prospect alone should get any fan excited.

It's such an obvious thing to do for the 50th, that I am actually concerned they will resist the urge to do so. This is one of the few times it would pay to be predictable.

Really really nice. Kind of wish they had left the copy on the bottom right off. Would look better cleaner and it's not like fan's can't figure out where the FB page is.

Alright gentlemen, I want to start watching some classic Who. Open to the idea of jumping around and watching the "best" since I have heard there is a fair amount of filler that can be hard to watch. Any recommendations on where to start?
