Dry cleaning is pretty expensive up here given the lack of competition so if I don't have to dry clean something I won't. I'm not too good to wash by hand.

Meshulam Riklis was known to hand wash Pia Zadora's unmentionables.

Despite the initial reaction and the hasty, sloppy post, the feedback was informative.

That probably will work for most items, especially if some other precautions are taken. It leads to an inquiry for those who machine-wash. What other than "cold" or "delicate cycle" do you do? For example, do you use special detergent or mesh bags?

I wash pretty much everything in the machine, but I put anything fragile in a mesh washing bag and that works well.

I use Woolite for fine washables, especially if they are wool. I don't use any bleach; even if it says "colour-safe". I don't use fabric softeners either as they are cationic detergents and probably not a good idea with delicate fabrics.

Where do you live? I live within 5 minutes of 10 dry cleaners in TO. The place I take my good stuff to is $6.50 a shirt but its a hand service. My everyday stuff I take to a regular place thats about 2 bucks a shirt, if I washed dress shirts myself it would take me hours to iron them perfectly.

I noticed the poll and can't imagine that hand washing would be at all convienient what so ever, I think it is very time consuming and in this fast paced world who would have the time for it.
