I have the maid hand wash the things that need it. Can't imagine myself doing it though.

The washing machine I use is front loading without an agitator. I think it is gentle enough, especially on the gentle cycle with cold water. I usually wash "handwash only" items that way and dry flat or hang up (depending on item).

I don't think I've every washed a sweater, but I have washed some other delicate things using the Hand Wash cycle and it appears to have turned out just fine.

I am a cheap bastard and, as Sartorian said about himself, a "preservationist."
So I hand wash silk or wool socks, sweaters, hats, and scarves, (w/ shampoo and conditioner) as well as anything w/ stains on them (w/ various solvents).
Agree w/ shoe too about it being meditative.
