buyer recently bought shoes with me and complained about the condition (they are new and firsts, but had a flaw I hadn't noticed). I told him I would refund him if he sent the shoes back. this isn't good enough for him, he wants the shoes at a discounted priced.

what are the odds ebay dings me the price without making him send the shoes back to me?

I was on the opposite side of this once when I bought a fake ipod. I needed to send it back before I got the refund. same will apply here...I hope?

I was scammed 2000 $ on a DBX 160 SL high end compressor.

Paypal didn´t nothing for me.

I have been scammed for some italian guys lately, luckily paypal returned me both the item and the money this time.

When I was on the music bussiness and bought sell too many high end machines, it was usual people videotaped how do they put it in the box , wrapped etc to avoid scams as this. Or the insurance avoiding paying the insurance if the machine came bended as usual.

You can either paypal it to him directly (make sure you do it through the "refund" link in the original transaction, not start a new transaction), or he will start a SNAD claim where they will put a temporary hold on all of the funds. You can then make an offer to him for a partial refund, and only when he accepts, that amount will be deducted from you account and the rest will be returned back to your active funds.

I can relate to many of the comments in this thread.

I had heard bad things about Ebay's rules changes in 2008 when some friends told me to never sell on Ebay again. Those rules changed Ebay from being relatively easily for dishonest sellers to hustle buyers (which was a problem) to being heavily weighted to give dishonest buyers the ability to easily hustle honest sellers (which has since become a big problem).

Needless to say last year I ignored advice I put up some seasonal auctions I usually do and sure enough, come across a completely dishonest buyer who knew how to work Ebay's system and get free stuff AND their money back.

To the OP: same thing has happened to me before.

I ended up winning by CALLING up PayPal and charming the hell out of the CSR. Be calm and be genuine and really explain your case with a sense of desperation. Through e-mail and automated back and forth PayPal dispute banter, you are treated like a robot. Talk to a human there and I think it will increase your odds of being treated like one.
