it's all a matter of context, though. my kitchen is the opposite of a high-tech lab. my stove is a 1954 O'Keefe and Merritt. The tile goes quite well with that homey feel.

The colors are pretty garish, but that was what came up, with an explanation of the stone.


This is also lava stone.

Hmmm. The foundation is 'lava rock', but the surface is enamel - because lava rock be itself would be useless. I don't much like the look if it. The new quartz patterns are more attractive IMO.

My 1953 O'Keefe & Merritt is sitting at the top of my stairs waiting for a new home (in case anyone wants Foodguy's kitchen for themselves).

Exactly. 49 steps, to be exact. I thought about putting it on Craigslist for 'free to haul away', and then I realized i'd have to ask whoever came for it to sign a waiver of liability.

true story: when i got mine, i had an old kenmore that had come with the house. I carried it out back by myself. When the o'keefe showed up, it took 6 men to move it into place (with only 4 steps). i'm not sure what percentage of it is cast-iron, but that sucker is a tank. works like a dream, too. doesn't have the highest btus available (think mine tops at 14,000), but it's got a waist-high broiler and a nice griddle in addition to 4 burners.

I know a couple people who own lava stone tops and I think they look good in person and are not as useless, as you might think, the local supplier even sells bathroom tiles.

I saw a picture of marble dining table with a very basic metal frame and wheels underneath the other day and I was thinking about doing something like it just with out the wheels and with the lava top.

Sounds like the American version of an aga
