Do you glove experts agree, that Carpincho is better than Peccary? Especially for gloves?

Thanks, look forward to your input!

Carpincho leather is supposed to be more elastic and softer than peccary. I don't know which is considered "better", although both are expensive.

I have a pair of Capybara/Carpincho leather gloves, bought a few years ago from Handschuhe Beschorner in Vienna, Austria. They are very comfortable, tough and have kept their shape well. The saleswoman told me that Carpincho leather has a one-way grain that allows it to stretch in only one direction. This allows the glove to stretch to fit the hand without becoming loose and misshapen over time.

In the end, no...I would have gotten gloves but I could not stray from my beloved Madovas.

I wrote up a summary of what I liked here. One of the stores that I discuss, Arandu, has a lot of things in carpincho.

BA is really a great place...from time to time, I think about buying an apartment there. There are fantastic pre-WWI buildings easily comparable to the best buildings in Manhattan or Paris, but dirt cheap.

I may be in Peru in a month and a half, if there is someplace in Lima or Cuszco that has this stuff I would be happy to serve as a proxy. If I am able to go I will also be hiking to Machu Picchu and I am willing to kill any wild animal I see for its hide.

OK, carpincho / capybara makes fabulous gloves. Get a caramel brown and you'll never look back. The leather is a suede, very soft, very light like deerskin. The wind seems to penetrate them a bit and they don't really serve in 20 degree weather, but as a glove for winter driving or walking when it's in the 30's, you can't get better.

I first saw them in a Ben Silver catalog and then in London, I swear the gloves probably cost $250 at the time. I loved them, just not that much. I was in a little shop called Pampas Corner in The Plains, Virginia that imported things argentine and saw the gloves for $75. Sized gloves, not S/M/L. I bought two pairs on the spot -gave one to a friend for christmas and kept the other. I went back to the shop and bought another two pairs at a later date, though they were $90 at the time. The two friends that I've given the gloves to swear by them.

Pampas Corner has since moved somewhere in Washington DC and I've totally lost track of the store. They had great stuff, terrific blankets and cool leather bags and things-gaucho in addition to the gloves. The couple that ran the shop were really nice, they were connected to the ateliers and artisans in Argentina and did direct import. Same gloves that B Silver and places like Bergdorfs in NY carry.

If you can find a pair at a decent price, say $125 or below, buy em. I wouldn't suprise me if they cost $25 in Argentina.

Which you could probably do without too much difficulty. They're docile, tractable, gentle creatures by nature.

We took our son to the Buenos Aires Zoo, and were startled to encounter free roaming capybara and this creature...

...on the grounds.

It really felt alien.

Capybaras or Patagonian cavies (or "maras," as they're also called)?

Capybaras are hunted for their meat in South America, so evidently some people find them palatable. Couldn't find out anything about Patagonian cavies, although their diet would suggest they'd be okay. I've heard they can make affectionate pets.

They had some nice breeches...I got a couple and a few things from their tack room on the second floor. They had some beautiful saddles.

They also have some crafts made by gauchos, like belts, bracelets, etc...the non-riding stuff that I got was for presents, however.

La Martina is nearby if you have an interest in polo gear.
