Can one alter an overcoat?

I've been looking for a herringbone overcoat and snagged just what I was looking for off of eBay. The overcoat fits me perfectly across the shoulders, but seems to billow out a bit past the waist. I'm wondering if it's possible to "take in" the lower part of a wool overcoat or is that too radical/costly of an alteration to be done?

Yes, it can be altered like a regular jacket, however, it will probably cost you $30/seam instead of $20/seam.

Overcoats are designed to be worn with a jacket underneath so make sure you are getting what you want from it.

Yes of course you can can have the coat altered. I regularly have my top coats altered especially having the sleeves slimmed.

I also agree with the cost quote mentioned above. Sounds about right to me.

Thanks for the responses. The billowing occurs even when worn over a suit, so I'll definitely have it altered. My followup question is thus: what is the proper silhouette for an overcoat when worn over a suit? Right now, it appears almost like a "dress" and flairs outward. Should the coat hang straight down from my armpits or should it have slight waist suppression?

I like mine with waist suppression. Check out this from GQ:

No matter how many layers I have on, I like a nice sleek look.
