I'm trying to decide between the Crockett & Jones Connaught and the Hallam. The Connaught is on the 236 last and the Hallam is on the 348 last. Can anyone tell me the differences between the two lasts? I know the 236 last is a more traditional round-toe and the 348 last is more of a chisel-toe, but is the 348 noticeably more elongated? Are they pretty similar overall? Also, how would both lasts compare to the Allen Edmonds 5 last, which fits me well?

the main difference is how they fit to your own feet. there's no way to know before you try them on.

236 is dead traditional round-toe last. No elongation, no sharpy sharp, no chisel. I think they run a little loose but everyone is different.

348 is modern, elongated, sharp, and chiseled. Its very noticeable, just look at the pics.

I now own both the Connaught and shoes on the 348 last (Hallam / Westbourne) and I would recommend the Hallam. As you pointed out the Connaught is much more traditionally shaped but I like the sleek look of the Hallam. To be honest, the AE 5 last is crap compared to these two. My Strands / 5th aves are clunky, extremely round toed and remind me of bowling shoes.

In terms of fit, I am a 8.5D in most brands, I wear a 8E in the AE 5 Last with a little bit of room. I have the Westbourne / Hallam in 7.5UK and they fit me like a glove. I also have the Connaught in 7.5 and they are a bit looser. If you want something traditional and an upgrade from AE, go with the Connaught. If you want something sleek, go with the 348. Hope that helps.

Would the Connaught still be sleeker than the Fifth Avenue?

Hi gfreeman

I have wide feet (size 12). The salesman at C&J would only sell me the Connaught. Said that none of the handgrade range were roomy enough.

Yes, the Connaughts will still be sleeker than the Fifth Aves / Park Aves. The fifth avenues are about as sleek as a pair of clogs

Where would you recommend buying a pair of Connaughts in NYC area? Do they ever go on sale?

Crockett and Jones store is your best bet (56th between 5th and 6th). Barneys carries them as well but I've found the C&J staff much more helpful and knowledgable wrt sizing
