If you're a travelling consultant, black pants are a must because:
1) they don't show dirt, so you can wear them an extra day if need be. Unfortunately, business travel calls for need be quite often.
2) They register on people radar like a patterned or colored pant would, so you can wear them an extra day.
3) They match everything but dark shirts.

Charcoal grey pants serve the same purpose, yet do not look "intense" during the day like black pants do.

becoming an analyst at a management consultancy?

- No suits required unless working in NYC, Finance sector at your level
- Get 5-10 non-iron shirts to keep in rotation, no-one cares how well you dress (they only care if stained, smelly, wrinkled)
- Get 3-4 pairs of dark pants per the advice given
- Your interview tie will work the first time you need one... then figure out how many you need
- 1 pair of black oxfords w/ captoes, 1-2 pairs of loafers
- Knee pads
