Bow tie length?

I'm having difficulties choosing the right length of my bow ties, how long should the "strap" be? The clip/hook that attaches the shorter end to the wider end ends up right below my chin where the bow tie...ties...where the knot is. The metal clip/hook destroys my bow tie!

Is there like a standard measure, I'm a 16 (EU 41).

I know how to tie it, but I'm not aware of the proper length of an untied one.

Assuming you are using a bow tie shaped like

>-<>-----<>-<

When the tie is tied, the inner "bulges" should be folded over in their centers. If they aren't, then adjust the strap.

I don't know anything about a "proper length" of an untied tie
