Boot questions

I have a couple of different questions about the AE Bayfield and Trickers from STP (which I believe are handmade derbys)

The first is regarding the proper fit of shoes. My Trickers when laced up come together and fit almost perfectly. However, my bayfields stay open at the bottom does that mean they are small or the Trickers are big? I am guessing based on common sense that it means they are small but am just wondering if it is possible for the sides of shoes when laced up to not touch.

The trickers I have been wearing at nut brown, and are bleeding from what I have read that is normal. However, are the trickers from STP waterproof? Or do I need to add waterproofer. Also it seems that pick up a lot of stains from other places it looks like rain but maybe something else. How can I clean this up?

Also, with Chromexcel leather can you use shoe cream or is it better to use polish? I have read not to use anything but aqua care cream. Any suggestions as to what is best?

Your boots aren't waterproof. Short of rubber galoshes, nothing is waterproof.
I don't own cxl but I'm not sure the guys that do ever polish them...I would think nourishment would be good though

I've got a pair of black AE Bayfield's. The laces also don't touch.
If I tighten the laces on the boots without putting them on, they don't touch.
I've not seen a single picture of the boots where they do touch.

There was a thread on the Bayfield last year, it included pics. No touchy.

This is (partly) a question of design and stylistic choice.

When you design a shoe and make the pattern for a particular design, you can cut the quarters (side pieces) in such a way,
that they meet in the centre or that there is a gap between the edge of the quarter and the centre line of the shoe/boot.

Boat shoes have traditionally a very large gap between the quarters. American designs aim for a wider gap than English designs.

As example: Alden's "˜Indie boot' is designed to have a large gap (at least ¾ of an inch).

There would be something wrong with the fit, if you could get into the boots and close the quarters edge to edge.

That is not the way they are designed. It is just a matter of taste and choice.
