Where do you live? Most cities have a bonsai club that's the best way. There will be good beginners material with the members and people who will help.New bonsai project: crassula tetragona or “miniature pine tree”. It’s not a Pine at all, it’s a jade plant relative and well suited to our Mediterranean climate.

You can pick up bill valvanis' magazine International Bonsai for step by step instructions on creating trees. Its beyond beginner but you'll sense what all is involved.
I'd also recommend looking to see if there's a bonsai nursery near you to buy a finished tree. Start with a juniper.
