Quite honestly, I don't think many countries with new money are good at looking he part. Whenever you hear about some rich guy doing outlandish ****, it's usually from a developing region like India, Singapore, or Oman. Old money really does have a knack for class.

In tha last 10-15 years, most of those who have become billionaires in India have become by getting some sort of licences from the government, be it mining leases, spectrum for telephony, oil & gas exploration rights, permission for setting up special economic zones (SEZs) etc.

Incidentally, I was trying to set up a small SEZ myself till the money dried out 2 years back for those kind of projects. The outlay was around 300 million INR and the expectation that I would be able to unload to a foreign investor for 6 times that.

The size of my SEZ was 25 acres which is the smallest size permitted under the SEZ policy. Mukesh Ambani was planning a SEZ of 25000 acres. His also got mired in some problems and has reportedly been cut down to 1500 acres.

Are you actually being serious? If you think this building is garish and unseemly, I really must question your knowledge of how many "old money" families made their fortunes. You're talking about slave labor, colonialism in the worst sense and a level of exploitation that would make most liberals faint and even cause blushing in staunch fiscal conservative Republicans. This building underlines a problem in Indian of a lack of wealth distribution, but ultimately something like this has an economic ripple effect that is better than had it not existed. Unfortunately it probably speaks to a certain level of corruption and nepotism, but India is improving at a fast rate. The larger its middle class can become, the better. Obviously the fact that a few hundred million people are still living in bronze age conditions but to turn that around in a few years is basically impossible. It's important to not confuse the "new money" lack of taste with their importance to economic development, and it makes them no better nor any worse than "old money".
