It was not so hot back then. These places were near the harbour, had proper ventilation and there were much less people and more trees.
I don't know about the impact of buildings - I've been at Sungei Buloh, McRitchie under the jungle canopy, Changi Village, even Pulau Ubin - nice open and breezy, no buildings - and the weather is still heat shock inducing within hours. Going out at night, it merely takes longer to get drenched, but it is still inevitable. I think you guys have the combination of more adapted genetics and 2 years of NS to shock whatever is lagging into adaptation. Even back then, LKY thought AC "changed the nature of civilization by making development possible in the tropics". Average temperature in the mid-20th century (no data before then) was around 26 vs 28.5 today, still pretty warm for long sleeves let alone a suit... what makes the difference is the steamy air, as your natural temperature control (evaporation) doesn't work in 100% humidity.

In his early 20th century incarnation, Tywin Lannister:

In true SF fashion, he liked a soft collared (almost BD) striped Spier shirt, and SB peaks, 2019-fashionably pointing below the shoulder:

He'd have easily won this Friday Challenge:

"Are you trying to say something about NS whilst avoiding OB markers?"

Please explain what does NS and OB markers mean? I grew up in the analog world.

BTW, we never use "whilst" in North America. Must be a reaction to Banestre
Tarlton's depredations. or the burning of the White House

Macmillan served in the Grenadier Guards during the First World War. He was wounded three times, most severely in September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He spent the rest of the war in a military hospital unable to walk, and suffered pain and partial immobility for the rest of his life.(Wikipedia)

My apologies, I thought for some reason you were Singaporean... In any case in jokes aren't great in general conversation. Macmillan abolished national service and was responsible (in part) for the accelerated independance of SG through his focus on a united Europe at the expense of the Commonwealth. A position that it seems is now being reversed by his current Party heirs...

Key intermediary between FDR and Churchill. Beloved
