I plan on commissioning a double-breasted black & white herringbone overcoat from W.W. Chan next month during his visit to Washington (J. & J. Minnis #2010).

I have bought-off on the forum's suggestion for a basted fitting and then a forward fitting for suits from the Chan-Man (at least, for my first couple of suits), but what about overcoats? Is a basted fitting fine, or should I go for forward fitting as well?

FYI, I have in mind a coat that looks something like this.

for suits or topcoats, is the customer allowed to request more fittings without paying more?

Nope. Some have mentioned it's $100 per fitting + the cost of mailing the item to HK.

I commissioned a coat in exactly the same fabric recently. I had a basted fitting in March. When the finished coat arrived, there was still a slight issue with sleeve length (the right was about 1/2 an inch too long), so I sent the coat back to Chan. Based upon photos I e-mailed, they feel confident that they can make it right. It should be back soon, just in time for the true dog days of summer.

I'm sure that the customer is allowed to request anything he likes. Whether Chan's people agree to those requests are another matter.
