Baldwin Raw Selvage

Hey David,

I dropped an email to the Baldwin email address yesterday but I'll ask here, too. Can you provide some sizing guidance and/or measurements on the Reed in raw selvage? It often seems that denim brands recommend sizing down one in the waist -- I'm usually a 32 in dress pants, but most denim I have is a 31. What's the shrinkage/stretch factor for this fabric?

I can get back to you with specific measurements for the fabric we have in stock right now tomorrow if you like. However I will say it definitely depends on the denim you have typically been wearing. We are more of the vanity sized variety, meaning a waist "size" is often going to measure a bit larger. For example our 30 will often times measure about 16 inches across the waist, making it a 32 inch waist.
As far as the stretch goes, I would always suggest buying them slightly more snug than you wish for them to fit in the end. A lot of people suggest sizing down in a more extreme manner, but I don't think it is that necessary. In my experience, the tighter the jean, the more it will stretch - but that doesn't mean you have to get it super tight or anything. For example, I could wear either a 30 or a 31 depending on how I want that particular jean to fit. Sizing down will keep it more slim/snug, but a 31 would still fit me appropriately.
I would expect about an inch or so of stretch in the waist, and some give wherever else it feels snug.

Are there any plans to release a shadow selvedge denim or any denim trousers in the near future?

So I snagged a pair of the '76 jeans. Anyone know anything about the type of denim used? Weight/origin or anything else? I know they're wide-loomed, and I'm hoping these are the same quality you'd expect from the other raw denim offerings. They fit nicely, but definitely thinner than other raw jeans I've seen.

One thing I did notice was there isn't any chain-stitching on the hem. I thought that was pretty usual for a high-end denim co.

The '76 is a 12.5 oz yarn-dyed, wide-loomed denim woven in the US. The feedback so far on them has been really positive. I think if you are comparing it to our selvage options, then you aren't going to find the same depth of character. However it is a great jean for the price.

I'll start with a disclaimer. My name is Justin and I'm an online representative for Baldwin Denim. My presence here is not to push sales, but to simply answer questions and provide information. Now that we have that out of the way, let's discuss quality.

All of our raw selvage offerings are constructed from heavy duty 14oz black line selvage denim from Kurabo Mills that is woven exclusively for Baldwin, so not only are you getting some seriously tough denim, but you're getting some seriously rare denim, too. We use a sturdy chain stitch and triple stitch throughout that provides some serious stability. I have a two year old pair of Baldwin Henleys that I can say with one-hundred percent confidence will likely last ten more years or even longer.

Baldwin also offers darning and other repair services for any holes that may form as a result of wear.

Hey Justin,
I just picked up the Reeds in size 31. I currently wear a 29 for APC NS and 30 for IH. If i continue wearing this denim given that the Baldwins are vanity sized, how much stretching in the thighs and waist would I expect and would that make my pair unwearable? That said, would you recommend I stick to the 31 or should I size down? Thanks

If we're talking about the Reed in Raw Selvage Denim, I would consider sizing down if you like the way the size 31 fits you brand new. They'll grow about a full size on you throughout the break-in process.

No, just start wearing em. I have 4 pairs of henleys and never did a pre soak.
