Raw denim has a sheen that can look dressier when its new and crisp. Plus, its fun to break em in. Rather than going for sandpaper, id suggest taking a pair for a long hike or maybe riding a bike in a pair.

it depends on what kind of distressing you want to do, but you'd need some wet/dry sandpaper and a dremel with verious sanding/grinding attachments. you'd probably have to wet your jeans wet and use clips to make creases and sand the ridges.
after some practice (maybe try on some thrifted dark jeans) you'd probably get better results than 90% of the people on here who wear their raws and forget that they've been wearing pre-distressed jeans for their entire lives, save for the last 18 months....
oh, you must have not read the original post, ur bad. let me rehash it for you.... I have several pairs of raw denim ALREADY, instead of selling them and buying new distressed as u suggested, the plan is to try my hand at doing it... it is quite a difficult concept to comprehend, but I am sure you can figure it out.
