I’ve been working in the legal industry for over 20 years (not an Attorney) and in the past I worked at a snooty big firm that not only required but demand a suit and tie daily. As a result I have a good collection of suits. Well life changes caused me to put on a few lbs after taking a new job few years ago. Since then I manged to drop the weight gain and a few months ago started dressing in suits and ties daily.
Now I remember how much I really enjoyed dressing nice and have since really invested some money into both my business and street wardrobe. At first I would get a few good supporting comments on my new look. However now it seems some of the Attorney’s in the office seem to be alienated that I’m dressing better than them although I’m not an Attorney. I even got a few snide comments are you trying to be a male model now and why are you always dressed up and are you trying to make me look bad??
At first I would just laugh it off and not think anything about it, but I’ve noticed the invites to lunch gatherings has decreased and some of the guys I would hang out often with (sloppy dressers) don’t really come by my office much.
Not a big deal on the surface, but no one likes a “show off” or someone trying to make others look bad.
Has anyone had to deal with this at the office before?
I enjoy dressing up for work, but is there such a thing as dressing too nice?
