Lol I never knew Merlot is that popular. What do you think about Merlot? Almost as formal as Brown? Ok to wear with suit maybe?

Yes, easily. In fact I prefer Merlot to dark brown in some more gray suit type applications.

Isn't the following most common for AE's signature 5-last? PA - Black FA - Dark Brown Macallister - Merlot Strand - Walnut Throw in a pair of boots or some suede shoes and those are probably the only shoes you'll ever need from a minimalist point of view.
I agree with another poster. If you want a collection that gives some nice variety and gives you a couple options for business casual as well as suits with maybe some more casual happy hours thrown in, you've got a great collection up there. Suede or a chukka would be a good addition to give more "weekend" options, but it's hard to say that someone needs anything else if we're just talking about a business casual or formal business setting.

What is it then?

It's a Chelsea boot.

Though some may argue that Chelsea boots shouldn't have perf medallions or a chiseled toe.

But we don't exactly live in 1960's London...

Also, they did make Haight in black. There are two on my seconds list. Might be worth calling an outlet to see if a pair in your size is floating around.

They are what they are and they are not what they are not.

Part of allure of the chelsea is the simplicity, sure the perfs can be fine, but doing all that without having a regular chelsea boot is head scratch inducing.

You're right that we're not in 1960's london. Perhaps we should stop talking about the formality of shoes and start wearing blue suede neumoks to interviews with suits?

So back to my point.
If the OP was looking for a variation on the Haight, the MTO would be an option when it comes back around.
You can get it without broguing, and in whatever leather/sole you so desire.
It sounds like the only thing off limits is changing the last.

Shoe storage question..right now my shoes are in leaning towers of AE boxes...was considering some shoe racks like the ones on sale from AE....My concern is the dust factor. Based on the number of shoes I have most are only getting worn 2 to 3 times a month. Does the shoe rack make sense? I do not have a closet to keep the racks in to make them less of dust targets.

Just dust the shoes off before and after each wearing and you won't have an issue. I have a polishing mitt that I keep handy and I just give my shoes a dry wipe before and after each wearing.
