There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

^^^Yes, I thought the same thing. Might be good for the night club. Dunno. My office is casual, not business casual, more like weekend casual.

I have the AE soho in saddle, which was a captoe with the captoe line closer to the laces. It's one of my favorite shoes.

Not my picture, but you get the idea:

I like those. The Strand is another good example of a sleeker profile caused by placing the cap toe line closer to the laces.

I definitely agree with the cap toe distance which is why I never liked the Fifth Avenue. Another factor I think is the actual length of the toe box from the ball area. Although most AE owners would say the 5 last is one of the sleekest and longest, the distance from the ball (widest part of the shoe) to the tip of the toe is really not that long. Besides the shape of the toe box, the length is a big factor. The distance from the ball to the tip on my C&J dress shoes (348 & 337) is definitely longer than that of my AE Fifth Street. I used to own an AE shoe on the 0 last (same as the SoHo) and it had a longer ball to toe which made it look elongated.

The Strand has great proportions. I wish the PA and Fifth Ave had the same proportions.

Me too. It's why I'm considering a Brooks Brothers Peale shoe instead of the Fifth Avenue.

Honestly, J&M does the styling on the cap toe so much better. Their quality is just not in the same league these days.

But also include the Clifton. Great looking captoe, thought in a blucher style. Nordstrom still has them, I think.

EDIT: And the Peals are terrific!

I bought and returned two pair of the Peal captoes. The last was very unforgiving to my high arches. The quality was clearly superior to AE or Alden though.

How was the fit otherwise as compared to AE's 5 last (Park Avenue, Strand)? TTS?

I'm probably not the best person to answer. I've only tried on the 5 last once, in the size suggested to me by the salesperson. However, they were the same length as the Alden Hampton last, and the listed size matched my measured size. I found the last to be rather narrow with a relatively small difference in width between the heel and the forefoot, and I have a narrow foot.

I couldn't find a width that was both snug at the heel and roomy enough in the toe box. From what I remember, I liked the fit of the 5 last better. On the other hand, the Peals didn't flare out in that horrible way that some AEs seem to.

On edit, BB has a great return policy so buy a pair and see for yourself.

No, I usually don't wear them with suits, but they definitely could be worn with a suit, of the less formal variety. Today, I am wearing some navy slacks and an odd jacket. Been stuck in suits for the last 3 days.

With my suits, I generally wear the following shoes (more formal to less formal):
    AE Park Avenue (black calf)
    AE Strand (brown shell cordovan)
AE Leeds (burgundy or black shell cordovan)
    AE Macneil (burgundy shell cordovan)
RL Darlton plain toe blucher (brown shell cordovan) - the metal eyelets make them look less formal to my eye
    AE Bradley (burgundy shell cordovan)
AE Grayson (I know, I know, a tassel loafer [IMG]) in black calf or burgundy shell cordovan during summer months

Can you post some shots of the worn-in brown shell Strand? I'd like to see how it looks aged.

Here's a few of them that I have handy... different lighting makes them show differently.

can the AE bayfields with the Toby mini lug sole (rubber) be used for actual hiking?
or will i destroy the boots if i tried to climb over dirt and rock paths in them?

i was thinking about going hiking with friends but since it will only be an occasional thing for me, i thought maybe i can buy a pair of boots that can be worn anytime while still serving as my hiking boots
