What causes the toe caps to look like that. I noticed Cranes did the same thing .Abuse? Construction? Conditioning method?

I'm fairly sure it's caused by slight wrinkles in the piece underneath the cap, caused by the collapse of the toebox. Basically, if you feel my toebox from the underneath, you can feel that the lining there has creases in it.

If you mean what lets the toebox collapse, it's a mix of abuse and pushing it in. I don't abuse them as much as Crane's, but they do see a decent amount of walking on rocks, in sand, and they've gone in the ocean several times now. The one downside to these boots is the toebox shape. I probably wouldn't have paid retail for these, but they were $300-350. Not worth the $400 extra for Alden's toeboxes. And in Wolverine's defense, the structured toe box is excellent for being a workboot. The 744s are just a nice captoe shell boot, and at the price were a steal. The 721s, though... those are a work of art. I don't know why the short austerity wingtip boot isn't done by anyone else, but if you haven't seen it in person... it's love at first sight. Especially with the color, these 721s on their way to me are red, like #4 red (even though they are supposedly #8).

Took 5 minutes, brushed out the 744s tonight, just a little water brushing and they are back to clean, a little shiny, and just the slightest amount of wear on them.

[QUOTEOTOH, anyone know any ideas about brown suede offerings from Allen Edmonds? Is there usually fall specials? I would love Strand in very dark brown Suede for fall (how about a Strandmok in dark brown). I checked the website, under Leathers, and I see "Suede (0)"][/QUOTE]

Ask and you shall receive. We spent this afternoon reviewing shoes for our Rediscover America Sale in the Fall. Your Strand in very dark brown suede is on the list!

Best wishes,
Paul

If you do not have a very vast rotation, I would probably get the strands and mcallisters. But you are correct, the shell strand is gorgeous

Thanks for the input. I don't have a vast rotation whatsoever. However, I've thought about it a bit more, and given the likely (in)frequency of wearing, I'm leaning toward the shells. I figure it's better to shell out (pun intended) on the nicer pair than have 2 pairs which are hardly ever worn. We'll see how they compare in person. Thanks again.

How cool is this? I'm impressed every time Paul posts on here. There aren't many businesses that take the time to do this. This just reaffirms my loyalty to AE. My grandpa wore them, my dad wears them, and I'm wearing them.

In a Chukka, sure it is a year-rounder.

Oh, and I exercised my right to fuel financial recovery by purchasing McAllisters, tap sole, Bourbon. Happy Anniversary AE! Can't wait for the mail.

Where does it say "suede" on the website?? Under leathers?

Very disappointed with the shoe selection for the 91st Anniversary Sale.

I already own Walnut McAllisters and Tan Sedonas.

I wish they had the purple suedes (formerly webgem)... those shoes would be perfect for $199 (similar to strandmark).

The CEO is running amuck, or is that Amok in the thread the last few weeks. Glad to have you, Paul. Thanks for the insight?

Since you're reviewing things... any truth to the cappuccino shell (especially McAllisters) rumors we hear in early spring?

I missed the purple webgems too... Kicking myself for not grabbing those when they were offered.

On the other hand, I was looking to pick up the merlot McAllisters so I'm glad they were on sale for the 91st.
