Can someone explain the differences between the v-tap sole and the dainite? Advantage/disadavantages of each? Looking at the First Ave (firsts) with dainite or the First Ave (seconds) with the v-tap. About a $60 difference between the 2.

Others have this reasonably well covered, but my 2 cents: V-tread/tap/combo is my favorite AE sole, but it fills a different role than dainite for me. V-tap is interchangeable with leather soles in my eyes, and thus works for the whole range of AE shoes. Dainite can be used for dressy applications but is better suited to slightly more casual IMO. I also happen to think v-tread is the most comfortable sole - breathes reasonably well and has just a touch of cushioning from the rubber. It grips a bit better in wet weather for me as well. I also prefer the look; the welt on the v-tap options is sleeker, which helps maintain the profile of the shoe.

I have both soles in First Ave boots, and I use the pairs differently. The dainite/grain pair are my foul weather dressy to business casual option (anything short of a suit), but I think the calf and v-tap options look dressier. For the boots, as noted above, the v-tap welt is a bit sleeker and I prefer the look. Hope this helps ....

Thanks for the correction. I never owned a pair.

Everyone should own a pair of Neumoks!  When I first got mine I wasn't sure I'd like them as they weren't what I was expecting, but after a quick break in I have really come to like them. I also think I get more complements from them than any of my other shoes, some of which I paid over 3 times more.

It's sad, but they are on the 65 last and a balmoral. This may be the "most popular last" by virtue of the fact that I can't wear them. No PA, Strands, Neumocks, etc. it's not a surprise. In the 1990s I bought a members only jacket. All of the other members voted and made me give it back. I seem to be consigned to the 678 and 201 lasts.

Sir it would appear you have worn through those sandals. Might I suggest Island slippers? Pretty awesome.

Any thoughts on those vs Rainbows? These are Rainbows I bought for $10 a few years ago, and they've survived just about everything and are still going strong.

I also have Chacos, but those are in another league.

The Neumok 2.0 is on the 201 last. I have the 1.0 version on the 65 last.

There should be no reservations with Dainite. The Dainite seems to be commonplace with premium shoemakers but seems to be a lesser sole by many Americans. I have seen some pretty high priced luxury dress balmorrals with dainite soles.

I love them. Absolutely perfect on First Ave brown grains. And Strandmoks. Considering switching my Fairfax to Dainite when they get resoled.

Honestly, I *hated* the Dainite soles on my Rush Streets - they felt hard, were bad in cold weather and generally felt like a really poor substitute for leather.

I've heard Dainite has changed their composition in the last couple years. I recently wound up with a pair of olive Strandmoks with Dainite, and the composition is much softer and feels more comfortable. I'm actually pretty happy with them. I'm still more likely to replace it with a butyl sole or similar when the time comes, but maybe they'll convince me.

I have not had any rainbows but the island slippers are great and unless I have them mixed up with another pair they use horween leather on them. Sandal life is nice haha

On those mid 80s temps like @orange fury... Meaning a heavy dose of Kirks and Maries for the 4 day weekend.
