As the subject line says, I need some advice as I'm starting from scratch here. Background: I'm 35, 6'0" tall and hover around 200-210 pounds. Most of the weight is in the belly which I'm desperately working on. Since graduating college, I've always wore Dockers khakis and either a polo short or a short sleeve summer type shirt at work.
I always opted for comfort over fashion. Well now, I'm about to start a new job in the downtown financial district. The dress code in the office is business casual, but When I went in for a job interview (I wore a newly purchased/just in time for the interview JCPenny black suit), my new colleagues dressed in either:
1. dress pants, dress shirt, no tie
2. dress pants, dress shirt, no tie, sport coat
3. suit with no tie
I've set aside about $1200 to spend on a new wardrobe to get me on a hopefully a two week rotation. I'd like to dress in styles #2 and #3 above, but need advice on color and quantities. I went over to my local Nordstrom Rack and found some suits in the $250 range; sport coats around $150; and some non-iron/wrinkle free shirts around $30. While there, I had them measure me and found out I'm in a 44R in suits/sport coats and 15 1/2 34-35 in shirts. The dress pants I tried on were either 36/32 or 36/30. I saw some Louis Raphael dress pants around $30 that I could wear with a shirt and sport coat. My Nordstrom Rack can also do alterations, but I'm not sure if I should go to an outside tailor instead. My local Costco has some shirts for around $19 as an alternative. I have a TJ Maxx, but I have not gone inside to checked yet.
The advice I really need is if you were my fashion consultant, what would you put on my list to buy that would be around my $1200 budget (going a little over is fine)? Like what quantities, colors, styles, and combinations to make my wardrobe go on a two week rotation? Outside tailor or Nordstrom tailor? Any other advice is great appreciated as I'm really scraping what I had.
Thanks in advance.
