Seems like most people here like wearing suits. The other day I read some stuff on the internet saying men shouldn't wear shorts after adulthood! Tbh I am 33 and I wear shorts whenever it's warm enough to! Unless I'm doing something formal of course. Especially in the summer it just feels way too hot to be wearing pants all day! I don't wear baggy khaki shorts, I got nice shorts that fit just above the knee as they say is right, but now I'm seeing people saying men shouldn't wear shorts? When did this change cos literally just a year ago they had guides for men and shorts on reddit and etc

Honestly I think they're fine but they have to fit into your whole aesthetic so you don't look sloppy. Camp collar shirt sleeve button up shirt, well fitted short, white sneakers is an obvious and easy look that's coherent and stylish imo. I think that to look good in shorts you have to walk that fine line between looking put together but not super preppy (unless that's the look you're going for)

For me personally, I just don't feel like shorts fit into my wardrobe. For instance most of my casual shirts lean more Americana, and I think those would look bad with shorts.

"Men shouldn't wear shorts" is an antiquated menswear dictum stubbornly clung to by those either nostalgic for bygone eras when shorts were for children, or, mostly, people adopting that nostalgia since few grown men alive today lived in those eras.

As long as they are worn in appropriately casual settings, shorts are fine for any man, of any age, to wear.

You want to opt for chino shorts and ensure they don't fall below the kneecap. You don't want them to bell out, so a slim cut is preferable. Cargo shorts are generally regarded as verboten since they look frumpy and tend to be baggy, which makes you look shorter.

My personal guidelines regarding shorts is that they are not worn in the evenings or anywhere where respectable attire is obligated (church, sit-down restaurants, ceremonies of any kind, parties etc.), and they are not worn with shirts tucked into them, which I feel looks too preppy and it clashes with the casualness of shorts.

For me shorts signify defeat. Every time I put on swim shorts I think of
th sinking of the Prince of Wales and Repulse and the Fall of Singapore:

The losers all wear shorts

I like shorts, but strongly dislike chino shorts. Especially slim ones that end just above the knees.

I like shorts that have some aesthetic direction and don't like the "after" part of a before-and-after male makeover sponsored by Macy's.

Some examples of short outfits I like. Here are workwear and Americana type of outfits with shorts. In all these photos, notice the difference in shape, length, details (e.g. pockets), materials, etc. All these things swing the shorts into various aesthetic directions

Or it can be contemporary sportswear

I think I've come to the conclusion that I just don't really like shorts. Basically none of these appeal to me except very slightly the loungey vibes. I guess that's just life, I don't have to like everything :)

I had a pair of pink, yes pink, Edwin denim shorts with a slightly western vibe, that I wore in summers for the last 15 years until they literally fell apart. Now I have a couple of pairs of Engineered Garments shorts in floral and gun check patterns, and a pair of yellow-brown Ami canvas shorts to replace my Edwins. Hope they last as long.

And obviously running shorts (Asics, NB, Brooks, Tracksmith), since I actually run, and cycling shorts because... well, you get it!

Personally don't find shorts very flattering on anyone, but if it's too hot, it's too hot, at some point a minimum level of comfort becomes the priority. So my personal guideline is just that I wear them if not at work or any other "formal" occasion, and I feel uncomfortably hot in anything else. Or naturally for sports.
Too slim shorts are actually counter productive as you want air flow, but please no baggy cargo shorts in military camo...
