What are your opinions on shorts?

Agreed, I'm not trying to convince anyone to wear shorts. I don't think there are viable alternatives -- I was going to try linen trousers this summer, but I have trouble finding a pair that doesn't scream "namaste."

Thing is, on a typical Saturday afternoon in July where I am, no man, woman, or child within a 1-2 mile radius is wearing long pants. The rare, odd man is wearing trousers, looking down his nose at the gross display of bare legs, as others look at him and wonder "how can you wear long pants in this weather.." The "no shorts outside of the beach" school of thought is a shrinking minority.

This is a "classic" menswear side of the forum so it's expected. In the real world, walking 2 mins in the dead of summer will become uncomfortable and you will sweat. I find this thread entertaining so thats why I'm still here.

Plus shorts show off my leg gains!

I have several pairs of shorts which are only worn in the dead of summer. My outfit essentially becomes pretty basic in the summer: Shorts, a polo or t-shirt, and some trail runners or birks.

It's too damn hot where I live to wear much more.

I lived in Philly for a couple years where summer is hot as hell and I still only rarely wore shorts, even with a 1.5 mile walk to work every day. Maybe I just don't mind the heat as much as some people

While it would be very difficult to be at one's top stylistic game wearing shorts, pragmatism and comfort should always be a consideration. That being said, as someone that was born near the equator, it takes a lot more for me to be really hot so I don't have to resort to shorts all that often as I fortunately live in a much milder climate.

I wear shorts all the time. I even started wearing shorts to the office on Fridays during the summer. It helps that I lift and have big quads and calves so my legs look great.

I think most men who wear shorts would look better in long trousers. But beyond that, I say go for it.
Now that I'm well up into my 60's my legs are starting to look like "old mad" legs and, so, may no longer look as good in shorts as I once did. But, I always put comfort up as #1 when it comes to fashion. So, I'll stick with my usual pattern of putting them on when day-time highs get into the 80's.

I love shorts. Tough to not wear them in the summer living on the New England shoreline. Off the clock during the summer, unless I'm going to a restaurant or an event there is no reason to wear pants.

Exactly why I think he'd be fun to have a beer with!
Hmmmmm. I think those kind of rants are often funnier in theory than when you are on the receiving end of one.

About twenty years ago my buddy and I were driving through the midlands of Ireland and he started going "Pick up the ould lad, we'll have a bit of craic with him." There was an elderly man with a real thousand yard stare, kind of grubby, hitchhiking and we stopped for him. We were hoping he would go off on a rant and that we would get some amusement out it; he went on a rant alright, but it managed to be both nonsensical and boring, and He Did Not Stop. A litany of grudges against people who had wronged him give a little structure, but also he had many bad things to say about people he had never met at all. Needless to say, his destination was nearly as far as ours, and we had him with us for over an hour.
