At first I was planning to hand stitch new outsoles back on to replace the outsoles or at least redid the stitching. However, after the finger and bend tests I decided to do just the below.
Here are what I did:

- completely strip off polish caked up.
- straightened the curls, flattened the creases.
- redyed the shoes to their original dark brown color.
- installed new heel top lifts, sole savers, and flushed lulus toe taps.
- several rounds of Bick 4 conditioner and 2 coat of dark brown Saphir cream.
- hand sanded the edge and finished off with "antiqued" edge finish to create a contrast against the dark brown upper.

I wasn't planning to participate, but I just got these old Florsheims for $3, as a challenge to myself.

Note that they don't seem to be suede or nubuck. They're just so wrecked they look like it.

Any chance that the deadline can be extended to September 8 to allow us the full weekend to finish?

I am sticking to the original deadline. I will post the submissions thread soon.

Can you clarify 12:00 am September 6?
Is that midnight Thursday night, or Friday night?
(I’m not trying to be difficult, really.)

So, sadly, (for me) I won't be getting an entry in this year. The oxalic acid and bleach only got me to a dark charcoal on my shoes, so the brown option was no longer an option. I decided to embrace the blue undertones and go deep navy, which required the purchase and shipping of several other products that aren't going to get here in time. I'll document what I do here both on the "zombie shoes" and some others I am restoring so at least it may provide some value to people next year (as the 2018 Challenge did for me).

Here is one potential value-add - I had a lot of trouble finding pics of all the Fiebing's Pro Dye colors on actual leather. Eventually I stumbled across an Asian site that had every dye in different dilutions on real leather, so I put together a single image with them all, organized by my own categorizations re: color family. I found it useful for deciding between options within one color family since I couldn't afford to buy all of them.

They were 15 bucks. So I bought them. Again, with the Polished Cobbler... why am I doing this to myself... again.

But, this year the plan is far more diabolical. This year, merely de-correcting the grain will not suffice. This year I’m turning the stupid up to 11 and will attempt something for which I have absolutely no qualifications. I’m going to answer a question that absolutely nobody, ever, has asked.

In the meanwhile, here is the patient, a pair of 511 last 2000 AE Shelton’s suffering from, what I like to call, 8271 syndrome (CGitis):

They’re not nearly as worn as last years shoes, but they really don’t look very good. No amount of regular treatment, conditioning, cleaning, etc., will fix that creasing. Actually, they look shockingly bad, given they have almost identical levels of wear to this pair of 2011’ish 8221 regular calf Shelton’s:

Interestingly enough, these 2011’ish (I cant recall when I bought them) examples are quite a bit better executed than their 2000 counterpart (better linings, more even stitching, tighter outsole stitch, tighter and cleaner welt/sole trimming and finishing). And, of course, the leather is massively better on the 2011 version.

In fact, the quality of the underlying leather used for Polished Cobbler, by 2000, had nosedived substantially versus what was used in, for example, 1987. These 87 Berwick’s have substantially more wear on them that the 8271 Shelton’s above:

The difference in the quality of the break in the leather is massive, and while one could almost pass for shell at a distance, the other looks pretty awful, despite far less wear.

In short, I think these newer PC Shelton’s, in some ways, will be harder to get a good result out of, versus the more beat up McAllister’s from last year. However, this year, the level of chemical warfare that will be prosecuted against these poor unsuspecting shoes should result in something pretty spectacular (good or bad is anyone’s guess).
What did you end up doing with those saddle shoes?
