Insert in a new J.Crew catalog: an invitation to send email to [email protected] for "style advice, tips, and questions you don't want to ask your friends." Because "[email protected]" is "your style wingman." I must be in a surly mood, because I can barely resist trolling Jack with dumbass questions.

What a good service. I promptly emailed:

Hello Jack!

I have a quick style question! I'm looking to add some Sprezzatura to my every day looks, and I was wondering what was the best way. Leaving one strap on my monk straps undone? Wearing a watch over my shirt sleeve? Using a a bandana as a belt?

Thanks,

Concerned Customer

I got a response:

Your ideas seem interesting except perhaps the watch on top of the shirt sleeve—I just do not see that being very functional. The one thing to keep in mind is to make sure that you don’t seem overt in your attempt to have a bit of sprezzatura in your look/style. It needs to feel natural and not posed. How about your shirt just halfway untucked; your pant cuff not very crisp or precise; your belt a bit loose. Just do what you like.

Let's find out:

Dear Jack,

Thank you for your prompt reply! I did have one more question: I know someone (I wouldn't call them a friend, merely an acquaintance), who dresses with a very distinctive flair. He is known to enjoy pairing heavy tweed coats and ties with breezy summer shorts and is fond of using a sock instead of a traditional linen pocketsquare. Are these the signs of the distinctively dressed, or the painfully confused?

As my good friend V would say,

Dear Jack,

I apologize, but I do have one last question! I will be visiting a gentleman's club this evening, and was wondering the bast manner in which to transport a large amount of single denomination bank notes (we are expecting some precipitation tonight, if you catch my drift)! Would a briefcase work best, or a valise?

As always,

- B

I hate the term "wingman." I thought it would die in early 2001.

I always wonder when I will start finding pranks like this to be too immature to be funny. It is immature, but I still had a nice chuckle.

Top Gun made it pretty clear. You can be my wingman anytime. We're stuck with it as long as we have Val and Tom.

I actually don't like the idea of pranking this guy(s) - he seems to be genuinely helpful and it's not a service I want to see shut down because of over-spamming.
