I am looking for low-mid priced automatic movement watch that can be used as "tool" watch. What do you guys think of this?

I think it will serve you well and would recommend a Hamilton. Good value for the money. A lot of people like plain watches, so be forewarned of their negative feedback with this model. I on the other hand don't like plain or simple watches. If the model speaks to you I say definitely go for it.

I think it looks great, a bit like a Breitling Navitimer. The only thing I don't get is the left handed winding stem. Is this model made specifically for lefties? That aspect looks kind of weird.

Also, what is the price if you don't mind me asking?

I don't like the Breitling-esque dial with all the crowded numbers that's supposed to make you look like you have serious, technical stuff to time. First of all, it makes it less comfortable to look at and harder to read. Second, it immediately pegs the watch as casual. Third, no one that actually has serious, technical stuff to time would use an analog scale on their mechanical watch.

Hamilton has some watches with simpler, more straightforward dial designs. What about one of those?

mafoo - wouldn't you say the same thing about any chronograph that has a tachymeter bezel? The Omega speedy pro has essentially the same functions & markings. Same with most of Sinn's chronographs.

Do you have/like chronograph watches?

I agree that maybe it's a bit silly to have "technical" watch if you don't need it, but they're obviously a popular style these days.

I disagree that some people don't use them for their intended purpose. I flew jets in the Navy for 8 years and I actually did use my Breitling as a back up timing instrument.

I still have two Breitlings, but I find them too hard to read at glance because of the busy dial. I far prefer the Rolex GMT Master for daily use, as it has very legible dial and is pretty much bulletproof. However, it does not offer the timing functions (which I no longer need), and is far beyond the price range of this Hamilton.

But by that very reasoning, we shouldn't be buying mechanical watches at all...in fact, we shouldn't be buying watches, period. The point of these little machines is that we like them, not because we need them for serious purposes. If I only wanted a watch because I needed one, I'd stick with my IronMan Triathlon.

i see your point, but couldn't one say the same thing about wearing an Italian bespoke jacket, shirt, tie etc. to buy pastries??

BTW, I have no problem with either, as dressing up is never a bad thing.

I think the watch looks good....a little too busy for me, but still nice.
