This is a Canadian thing, not a Toronto thing (Quebec possibly excepted). There is a very strong current of religious traditionalism in a lot of families there; many women believe strongly in getting married as an essential part of a relationship, and will leave a guy who doesn't show any interest in starting a family. Men compensate by "locking in" a relationship early.

rofl @ moving to Toronto (and closer to NY!) to get away from hipsters. Geography fail.

Well said. I'm married now but when I was single and actually living in the city, meeting interesting & attractive girls was never an issue.
One just has to expand their boundries outside of "clubbing" and sitting on a computer.

Once again the Internet provides the answer. Join the Toronto Mensa chapter.

http://www.torontomensa.com/

As this is supposed to be the most active chapter in Canada, you should have no problems meeting an intelligent woman and making a love connection.

If it's just women in general you are looking for, Ottawa is a better bet than Toronto. Intelligent women? Sorry, you will have to make that evaluation for yourself.

I always seemed to have very little to talk about with my hair dresser, the receptionist / EA at work, and sometimes those who work in retail beyond the usual small talk. I like the idea of being in a power couple. There's usually a heck of a lot more to talk about and the dynamics are way more interesting. I find this especially true for pre-med / med and fellows/doctors. Lawyers are a mixed bag; some are greedy and self absorbed, others aren't too bad but have less to say than med students (in my experience anyway). Any suggestions on where to meet these kinds of women?
My hairdresser is smarter and more cultured than you. You don't sound like much of a catch though so I doubt she'd talk to you...

I'd suggest lines at film festival and book readings are pretty good places to meet people.

Also volunteering for TIFF/Hot Docs or any of the ethnic film festivals are probably good choices.

Dimitri has PUA written all over him. Pushing the limits, but there was actually some good strategy in there.

Have to admit, doesn't take much.
