I always have a watch with me, typically a wrist watch or occasionally a pocket watch. Though I've had a cell phone for nearly twenty years, I am ambivalent about always having it with me.

They make them much smaller now than they did back then.

Cellphones do seem to be getting larger these days though, especially some of the Android ones. Pulling out a Samsung Galaxy Note is certainly not a discrete way of telling the time.

I do wear a watch myself, not because it's jewellery, but because it's a great help for lesson timing in the classroom. Teacher using a cellphone(a large Samsung Android phone) in front of all the students, does not make for a good impression.

Wait your phone is in your pocket?
The death of the watch isn't because of phones. It started long before that. Today how often are you in some place without a clock? My car has two. Not counting phone or GPS. I can't think of how many places I'm in that don't have a clock.

I can, the place where I work, no clocks in the classrooms, Can't even rely on the clocks in the offices being accurate. My bicycle doesn't have a clock either.

A watch stopped being a functional item a long time ago.

For some of us a watch probably ceased being a functional item. For others like myself, wearing a watch can be rather essential.

Agree.....best cell phone era for me would have been about 5 - 6 years ago when I had my last regular cell phone. Went to a Blackberry then, did not like. Moved to an Iphone 4S and it is only marginally better. Guess us old pharts prefer a phone that's just a phone and not a personal vibrator also.

I don't even consider them to be cellphones these days, they're computers. As cellphones are basically computers, many of us certainly use them as computers now, browsing internet, watching movies, games, organising our lives, etc. Perhaps the larger the screen real-estate, the better, as long as it can comfortably fit in your pocket that is.

For my needs, I still like to wear a watch, as a discrete and convenient way of knowing the time of day.

Have always worn a watch - feel nude without one. But it really isn't that big a deal. How do you know the time if you don't though? Unless you're one of those fannies who won't leave their mobile phone alone for more than a minute and always puts it ostentatiously on the table in the pub, that is.
I absolutely always have my phone. Sad, huh?

I only wear one with short sleeves. If I wear long sleeves, what is the point? I look at my cellphone for the time, and I have to do the "flick & check" for anyone to even know I'm wearing a watch.
Ah yes, the old flick and check...

I went back to wearing a watch daily.

I am between working where phones are not allowed, and working in shop and the risk of breaking my mobile phone is too much, so I went back to checking time with my watch.

Besides, I like being the one person who doesn't incessantly look at their phone throughout the day.

In my opinion it is perfectly fine to go bare wristed. I don't wear jewlery of any sort and I consider a watch an accessory rather than a necessity. I have a mid range watch (Oris BC3) that is worn while traveling for business and a cheap watch for when I travel on vacation (I don't like to call attention to myself while out of my hometown/country. The exception would be a special occasion ie: wedding). I never wear a watch when I am home.

I do however greatly appreciate the precision and engineering that goes into a fine watch, and as a result I have contemplated buying a Speedmaster or Panerai but cannot justify either as it would hardly ever be worn

There may be nothing wrong with not wearing a watch, but the battery in it won't run down anywhere as fast as the one in your phone. Your wristwatch may very well be the only time piece that you have any control over to ensure its time is accurate. If you have a mechanical watch, it may be the only thing running if everything else fails. If you have an analog watch, you can use not only to tell time, but direction.

As for the jewelry factor, I'd rather wear a watch than any other article of such, including cuff links.

This. I like to be able to just look at my wrist to tell the time, rather than having to pull my phone out my pocket. Also, using a phone to tell the time is kinda like wearing a graphic t-shirt; it serves it's purpose but it has no class.

What are you, 75?

Comparing people who check time on their phones, which is ubiquitous now to graphic tees just show how out of touch with the society you are.

Oh, and two simple arguments for using your phone: 1. It lets you carry less stuff, 2. Time on your phone is always accurate whereas you need to worry about ur watch being off.

Btw, lol @ people talking about flip phone. :notsureifserious:

Damn teens! Checkin' the time on their pocket-telephones, listenin' to their jungle music, drivin' around in their Camaros! This country used to have class, I tell ya. Class.

Which society? Hip-hop? Chav?

You don't exactly carry a wristwatch though do you? Like not wearing a tie or a ring, because they let you carry less stuff?

2. Time on your phone is always accurate

Not always. I've got a Nokia here, have to reset the time and date every time I remove the battery or it becomes discharged, So usually I just didn't bother and left it at defaults most of the time 1am 1st January, 2009 or whatever it is. Think it's supposed to keep time and date when power is removed, but it doesn't.

Also it may not be convenient or good manners to be pulling out and fiddling with a cellphone, e.g. a school classroom. Many places ban cellphones or they MUST be turned off. I was working at a school a couple of years ago, one of their rules was "NO MOBILE PHONES". Cellphones must be OFF on flights in China, NO flight mode allowed. Many factories have rules about cellphones and other personal electronics, they must be turned off. There's NO CAMERA rules that many business', organisations, government agents, academic establishments, etc.have. Just about every cellphone has a camera......might find yourself being escorted off the premises, sacked or arrested for checking the time.

...not wearing a watch.... please just don't ask "Have you got the right time there, mate?" :)

"Hey! yah got the time on yah?"..."Yeh, time you bought a watch!"

whereas you need to worry about ur watch being off.

Don't buy cheapo watches then. Anyway if one is that paranoid about knowing the exact time down to the microsecond....

They're still very popular though. Many manufacturers make them,
