One other question - a lot of you folks mentioned cutting down on dry cleaning by doing laundry at home. Do you mean on shirts? How do you take care of wool pants, sportcoats, etc??

I usually end up dry cleaning my rotation of 6-8 wool pants about once every two months after about 4-5 wears each. I probably spend about $40 a month on dry cleaning - not that bad, but if you folks have tricks for cutting down....

The shirts are laundered and ironed at home, a significant savings if all your wear are dress shirts. For wool trousers, you just need to take care not to get any stains on them and occasionally use a brush or lint roller to remove accumulated layered dirt; the same thing is done for sport coats. I only dry clean once or twice a year, and that's normally because I get strains on it once or twice a year. I've got about 10 pants in rotation, most of them wool slacks, so I only wear them two to three times a month so 25-30 wears a year. Wool is fantastic fabric in that it isn't as absorbant in both liquids or smells as cotton so you can get a lot of use out of it.

I go a step further: For me and apron or a coverall is de rigeur for all of my tailored clothing.

Recently, it's been about using my own time and resources to accomplish savings. The laundry, dry cleaning, washing car, building headphone amplifiers, and simply being patient has allowed me to afford higher value items. It would be brilliant to afford all bespoke winter weight wool to get me through the winter, though that hasn't happened yet. I maintain a minimal wardrobe and buy second hand as much as possible. By and large, I cut down on my own free time, maintenance takes time.

Nothing. I spend a very small percentage of my income on clothes (I never pay retail). I also wash, hang dry, and iron my cotton clothes and rarely need to dry clean my wool clothes.

Cut back on . . .
  • Furniture - I don't have a dining room table or chairs, I eat standing up (I should add that I'm serious since everyone thinks I'm ******* around in my posts)
  • TV - I have no television and thus no cable TV bill, and no NetFlix
  • Alcohol - I don't spend over $20 on wine bought in the grocery store, at bars I only drink Jägerbombs and Heinekens (just kidding)
  • Gambling - I don't play live poker as much I want
  • Kids and/ or GF - Go without because clothes are more important than interpersonal relationships
  • Gym - Currently no gym membership (use the apartment complex min-gym), despite that I'd love to go to Los Angeles Athletic Club
  • Food - Dumpster dive. Kidding, eat out less.
  • Dishes - I only have 1 bowl, for example

Seriously? Damn. I, being a SF member, am a big proponent of blowing large amounts of money on clothes and accessories, but that's crazy.

Being a 'college student':

Video Games
Postponed purchasing a watch for the past 2.5 years (Even though its an Omega PO, which I could get in a year if I didn't buy any shirts or shoes)
Going out - down to once a month and now no more than 1 measure of spirits with friends at the end of the week dinner.
Dating - took a break to work on getting things set up in life like a house, car and starting a retirement fund.

Can't afford to go anywhere that's not free, so I dress like a flaming peacock when buying groceries or shoveling snow. I'm only a few purchases away from Twotone.

The 'No Purchase Club for 2011" is already available and was started a while ago in February. But it is just for two months not for the whole year. If you have not yet joined, I will search it up right away and post the link here.
