A Ferrari is a super nice investment to save money. The money you spend on scort$$ can have them for free with the Cavallino.

just starting my career, so the question of whether to spend SF levels of income on threads is bugging me a bit.

don't want to re-start a similar thread in 20 years wishing i'd spent my coin on hookers and coke
instead of subtle bespoke detailing...

SF has me leading towards the latter, i hate the internet

If you are cutting back on buying other fairly frivolous stuff that's fine, a choice between buying some home entertainment kit or a suit for example. If buying clothes is stopping your from eating out, holidaying and so on, and you already have the essentials for your job and social life, then in my view you are spending too much on clothes. Buy less or buy cheaper.
Beyond a certain level experiences are worth more than material goods.

What's frivelous to one is not to another, and what an experience is worth is also varied by person. I have friends that drop EASILY $500 a month down in AC. I do not begrudge them that, but thats what they enjoy. I enjoy the clothes. People may look at me, a civil servant, with kids, and say how can you afford bespoke? I afford it because it makes me happy. I save every bit of discretional cash (and because we don't go out (when was the last time you went out with two kids under two and a half-can be quite difficult) we have that cash. My wife is great, and very minimalist, so much of that cash is for me!

Other friends wouldn't blink an eye at dropping $5k on a Caribbean vacation. Again, traveling when the kids are that young just doesn't do it for me. Maybe in 10 years that will change. I have friends who drive Lexuses...I'm cool with my Honda. I bring my own lunch and coffee to work, go to a pretty affordable gym thats around the corner from my house, and voila! Some people think that because you dress a certain way you have to have a certain amount of money because thats whats been engrained in our psyche, nice clothes=rich. Its just not true. I don't need to be hanging out in the meatpacking district every night getting bottle service (like some of my hockey teammates do). Its just not me.

That said, restaurant food is a bigger waste of money than clothing. Good trade off !

I have a rule, that I'm only allowed to pay in cash, not even debit...plastic is too easy to get sucked into getting just "one more".

  • I do my own laundry and iron my own shirts, so that saves me at least $30 a month.
  • I bring my lunch to work instead of eating out, which saves around $110 a month.
  • Instead of paying $50 a month to park at work, I park on the street a few extra blocks away.
  • Instead of paying $100 a month for membership at the local Racquet Club (where I only used the treadmills anyway), I run in the neighborhood, on the Seawall or at the city-sponsored Rec Center.
  • Using a clothes brush has reduced the amount of dry cleaning I need to do, to the tune of at least $20 a month.

Conservatively, by cutting back in these small ways (none of which my wife would have begrudged me), I've been able to save over $300 a month, coming close to paying for my clothing expenses.

Sound like me.

That's very interesting NYR, I don't use credit, but I think you're right on the debit card too. I shall try using this for non online buying!

Really Lasbar, while a good espresso machine for the home is expensive, it is also good value.

Perhaps like me, you can enjoy french press coffee in the meantime

+1 I also just started working from home so I'm not spending nearly as much money on gas and food.

Yup. I've the no-credit rule, too -- however, I do use my debit card as a credit card for the points.

Then again, I've heard that retailers may soon be giving discounts to those using debit cards and cash, and different rates for those using cards without points and with points. Oh well.

haha, this sounds like the ethos of the sapeurs. they'd literally rather starve to death than look cheap.
